The steps of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) to boost international recognition were increasingly aggressive. This is shown by the Industrial Engineering Study Program (Prodi) of the Faculty of Engineering which has just obtained international accreditation from the Indonesian Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (IABEE).
In this accreditation, UMM Industrial Engineering Study Program obtained Provisionally Accredited status. This status is intended for study programs who have not graduated graduates with the curriculum requested by IABEE. UMM Industrial Engineering Study Program, which started the IABEE-based curriculum in 2017 and visited the end of 2019, has not graduated yet because it has only been running for 2 years.
Next, if the graduates have graduated with the curriculum standard requested by IABEE, it will be visited, which will later become the General Accreditation status.
"So this accreditation is still in the beginning. There will be an accreditation in the next stage, because indeed IABEE has sustainable and continuous improvement principles. Continual improvement and monitoring," said Chairman of the Industrial Engineering Study Program UMM Ilyas Masudin, ST., MLogSCM., Ph.D ., Friday (3/4).
IABBE itself is an independent non-profit organization established as part of the Indonesian Association of Engineers (PII) to foster a culture of quality in the management of higher education in engineering and computing.
IABEE is recognized in Indonesia by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti) as the body responsible for the accreditation of study programs that provide academic bachelor's degrees in engineering and computing.
If National Accreditation by BAN-PT / LAM-PT is mandatory for study programs in accordance with Indonesian laws and regulations, while international accreditation by IABEE is optional.
"The feasibility of a study program to propose an evaluation process in order to obtain IABEE accreditation is determined, one of which, by its National Accreditation status," said Ilyas.
IABEE was formed with coaching by JABEE (Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education), which has signed the Washington Accord, a multilateral agreement that regulates the equality of various independent accreditation institutions from foreign countries for engineering study programs.
At present, the Washington Accord has 20 signatory countries, such as the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Russia, Japan, China, India, Turkey, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia.
The accreditation process starts every year after the study program fills in online registration. The evaluation process is implemented through checking the Self Evaluation Report documents by ensuring the outcome based process on the Common Criteria has been implemented in the curriculum applicable to prospective graduates of that year.
Furthermore, an on-site review study was conducted to clarify documents, the learning process, facilities, staff, students, graduates and stakeholders. The accreditation process ends after IABEE submits results at the end of the year. The accreditation results are valid for a period of 3 years and must be extended the previous year.
Interviewed separately, Vice Chancellor I for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Sc. said this accreditation was one of the achievements of the White Campus internationalization in the academic field.
"We want to get recognition from a number of international accreditation and certification institutions. Certification has been obtained by three study programs namely Animal Husbandry Study Program, Biology Education Study Program, and Management Study Program," said Syamsul.
All three study programs have been certified by the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN QA). Syamsul said, there are still two study programs preparing to get AUN QA accreditation, namely the Study Program of Communication and Psychology.
"After international accreditation by the Industrial Engineering Study Program, we will develop it into other study programs. Certainly apart from the IABEE which is intended for non-technical study programs," said Syamsul. (can)
