Surya Team of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) proved its perseverance by performing brilliantly in a number of categories of the Indonesian Bridge Competition (KJI) and the Indonesian Building Competition (KBGI) at the Jakarta State Polytechnic 7-10 November 2019. Although not qualifying as the overall champion, UMM won many achievements at KJI, namely Champion 2 in the National Bridge Model Cable Stay, Champion 2 in the National Bridge Model Plengkung, and Champion in the National Hope 1st Bridge Steel Scale.
Do not stop there, Surya Team at KJI also won the Strongest category, Implemented category champion, and champion in the Most Complete K3 category. The four teams namely Gajendra, Maheswara Team, Great Apollo, and Dandelion Diamond, whose proposals managed to qualify to compete with 50 other proposals. Ten finalists have presented their proposals in Jakarta. UMM is the only private campus that has succeeded in passing and side by side with state universities such as ITS, ITB, UB, Polban, UI and other state universities.
In the Curved Bridge category, represented by the Maheswara Team with the name Kar Jaged Bridge, the bridge won two titles at once, namely Champion 2 and Champion in the Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Category. Whereas in the Cable Stayed Bridge category, represented by Great Apollo by the name of the Tektona Bridge, the bridge got three achievements at the same time, namely the National Champion 2, the winner of the Strongest Bridge Category, and the Champion of the Conformity of Implementation of Design.
What is interesting is the Sapeh Kerrap Bridge, the bridge that won 1st place in the category of High Scale Highway Steel Frame was inspired by the local culture of Madura, "Karapan Sapi". The form of the rider holder is implemented in the form of railing. The shape of the ox horn is implemented on the shape of a streetlight pole. Besides being sturdy with deflection <2 MM, this bridge is also light with a structure weight of <150 KG. This bridge is very innovative because it is environmentally friendly and efficient distribution of loads.
Novan Surya Adityawan, the general chairman of the Surya Team UMM in his statement explained, although he was not fortunate at KBGI, he admitted that he was very satisfied with the achievements of his team. "Whether you want to win or not, the important thing is we have tried our best. We are not sorry, even though we are not champions. We will fix it in the next event. In 2014, UMM was the host of the 10th KJI and 6th KBGI. Since it was first held, both of them have always been held at state universities. Meanwhile, in KBGI at Maranatha Christian University, Bandung, November 2015, UMM succeeded in winning the General Champion, shifting the dominance of the defending champions of the Ten November Institute of Technology (ITS) and the mainstay of the host team, fighting for the Reka Cipta Griya Indonesia Cup to run very competitive.
